The Ōtāhuhu Business Associations objectives are to improve Otahuhu’s image, bring more business to Ōtāhuhu, keep Otahuhu safe and advocate for better roads, footpaths and parking by working in partnership with Auckland Council and other agencies.
History Of Otahuhu
Ōtāhuhu began as a military settlement, from which the Pākehā invasion of Waikato was launched in the 1860s. In the early 1900s, cheap flat land and easy access to ports, roads and railways made this an ideal area for heavy industry.
Where did the name come from?
The suburb’s name is taken from the Māori-language name of the volcanic cone known as Ōtāhuhu / Mount Richmond. The name refers to “the place of Tāhuhu” — the eponymous ancestor, Tāhuhu-nui-a-Rangi, of Ngāi Tāhuhu.
